Easy Place Card Holders: collage of four different simple plant place card holders- Thanksgiving, Mother's Day, Christmas, and Easter

How to make simple place card holders…

These are so versatile… you could use them for just about any occasion! And cheap too- I think the cards I bought cost around $2 for the package. Everything else was free.

What you’ll need:

  • scissors
  • fresh herbs and garden plants (I happened to have rosemary and I snipped some oregano, lavender, sage, and dusty miller from the garden.) If fresh herbs or foliage is scarce this time of year, a fresh poultry seasoning herb kit from the grocery store would do. Small tree branch cutting, berry stems, or flowers would work here too.
  • gift tags with strings I found these brown paper ones at Target. Any craft store will have them. Or make your own.
  • pen

1.Write names on place cards.

While it is possible to write these after attaching them to your herb bundles, it’s definitely easier to do it before. I found that my cursive skills were a little rusty (hey it’s been a long time since 4th grade!) and I needed to practice on scrap paper first.

2. Cut your herb stems.

Snip a 4-5″ stem of each herb and plant. If some are a bit shorter that’s okay- it’s good to have some variety.

3. Layer your stems.

Choose the largest, longest stem first to go in the back. Then layer your next-largest piece. I’m using rosemary and Dusty Miller first.

Add more stems to the bundle, using the shortest ones in the front. My sage stems were really short, so I placed them in front.

4. Tie your bundle together.

Using the string attached to the tag, tie the whole thing together. It’s okay if it’s just a knot. You want your tag to end up off to the side, with the name face-up. It may take some adjusting.

Now set it on your plate or napkin, and you’re done!
